Cars We Wish Were Transformers

In terms of movies made for gearheads, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" isn't exactly filled with motorized magnetism. I mean, of course, they're exciting: These are cars that transform into robots, and some damn cool cars at that (Optimus Prime is a Blue Peterbilt 379 truck; Bumblebee is a fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro; Sideswipe is a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray turned convertible), but in terms of the real, adult world, these aren't cars one daydreams about, the kind of cars that will solve your midlife crisis (unless you're suffering one at the age of 12, which is entirely possible these days). These aren't the dream movie cars of our youth, the ones WE wanted to drive so we could magically transform into Steve McQueen, Vin Diesel or Sean Connery and not ... Shia LaBeouf. Or, you know, a freaking robot -- unless that robot is Jason Statham. So, with that in mind, here are five cool, tricked-out movie cars we'd like to have seen added to "Transformers." You know there will be a fourth, so come on, Mr. Bay, think about these supercharged suggestions.

Marriage Ref Seinfeld Divorce

 Marriage Ref Seinfeld Divorce

A heartbroken Manhattan divorcé blames Jerry Seinfeld and his NBC reality show, "The Marriage Ref," for tearing him and his now-ex-wife apart -- claiming their appearance as contestants on an episode led to her dumping him.
Howie Kohlenberg, 47, charged that after getting their 15 minutes of fame bickering on the March 4, 2010, premiere episode, his wife, Christine, became so obsessed with becoming a star it busted up their 14-year marriage.
"The headline should read, 'Jerry Seinfeld ruined my life: the danger of reality shows,' " Kohlenberg said.
Not only does the beauty-products salesman claim his sexy 37-year-old wife ditched him and their 4½-year-old son to chase a dream of starring in a "Real Housewives"-style reality show, he also says he went bankrupt and is now facing eviction.

Lady gaga charity scam

Lady Gaga has been accused of pocketing proceeds from the sales of 'We Pray for Japan' wristbands and the bizarre singer is now facing legal action.

Michigan Law firm 1-800-LAW-FIRM has slapped a $5 million lawsuit against Gaga, reports aceshowbiz.com.
'I'm suing Lady Gaga simply to hold her accountable for giving the money that she was raising for charity to the cause that she was trying to raise it for,' said Ari Kresch, an attorney for the firm.
Firm partner Alyson Oliver claimed that Gaga refused to fully disclose how much of the money from the sales of the wristbands goes to the Japanese victims.
'When we tried to communicate with the defendants in this lawsuit, all we got was, 'well, some of the money is being retained, but we don't really know how much',' Oliver told FOX news station.
'If the money was going to the right place rather than into the defendant's pocket, then I hope that our effort helps that,' Oliver added.

Easy Slim-Down Strategies

Inside your body, a war is waging between the cells that make up muscle and those that make up fat. How can you be sure muscle wins the battle? By following these five slim-down strategies from our new book, The Women's Health Diet. You'll drop pounds and earn a lean physique - minus the hunger pangs.

I will eat it if it grows on a tree

Or a bush, stalk, or vine. Your goal is to fill your body with as many fat-discouraging nutrients as possible, and the very best sources of them are fruits and vegetables - and nuts too. A study at the University of California at Los Angeles found that the typical normal-weight person consumed about two servings of fruit a day, while the average overweight person ate just one a day. Another study found that eating fruit at the beginning of a meal reduces overall calorie intake by 15 percent.
Eating from trees will also give you more omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight abdominal fat. Some great plant sources of omega-3s are walnuts and flaxseeds.
YOUR PLAN: Include fruits and vegetables in every meal and most snacks.
SLIM-DOWN TRICK: Eat these slimming foods first. You'll consume fewer calories from other foods, and the fibre will help reduce blood-sugar swings that lead to hunger.

I will eat protein with every meal and snack

Muscle growth is triggered by protein-rich foods. In fact, every time you eat 10 to 15 grams of protein, you stimulate a burst of protein synthesis that helps build muscle. And when you take in 30 grams, that period lasts about three hours.
"The most important diet upgrade for people who want to lose weight is to eat protein for breakfast," says Louis Aronne, M.D., director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. In one study, people who started their day with a meal of eggs dropped 65 percent more weight than those who ate bagels.
YOUR PLAN: Aim to eat between 0.54 and one gram of protein per pound of body weight. Base this on your goal body weight. So if you want to weigh 130 pounds, you should eat 70 to 130 grams of protein a day
SLIM-DOWN TRICK: Eat more dairy. Researchers found that people who ate three servings a day were 60 percent less likely to be overweight than those who consumed fewer than that.

I will eat before and after exercise

Here's great news if you love to eat: You probably need to nosh more. Eating a snack of protein and carbs right before and after working out speeds muscle growth and recovery. Also, fuelling up can limit the effects of cortisol, the stress hormone that tells your body to store fat. As a result, you burn more fat during your workout and for the next 24 hours.
YOUR PLAN: Have a carb-and-protein snack 30 minutes before working out and a protein-rich meal after. The longer you wait to eat after exercising, the more your body will break down existing muscle and the less it will build new muscle.
SLIM-DOWN TRICK: Drinking a smoothie is a quick and easy way to get a protein boost after a workout. For tasty recipes, visit Womens HealthMag.com/nutrition/easy-smoothie-recipes.

I will become a salad savant

Salads deliver wildly important nutrients that aid weight loss. A prime example: folate, a B vitamin in leafy greens. A study found that dieters who ate the most folate lost 8.5 times as much weight as those who ate the least.
YOUR PLAN: Consume as many leafy greens as you can. Besides eating salad, add spinach to omelets and quiches.
SLIM-DOWN TRICK: Use a dressing made with safflower oil. It contains linoleic acid, which may prevent fat storage.

I will never have the world's worst breakfast

No, it's not leftover pizza - it's no breakfast at all. When you wake up, your body is fuel deprived. If you don't eat, you lower your metabolism, starve your muscles, and wind up taking in most of your calories late in the day. In fact, regularly skipping breakfast increases your risk for obesity by 450 percent.
YOUR PLAN: Eat 30 to 35 percent of your daily calories early. Match proteins with whole grains, produce, and healthy fats. If you don't have the time or appetite for a big meal, eat two small ones - have cereal early, then grab a yogurt and fruit to eat at work.
SLIM-DOWN TRICK: Have absolutely zero interest in eating in the morning? At least drink a glass of 1 percent milk, which will give you eight grams of protein plus fat-burning calcium.

Burn, baby, burn

Your body is already a fat-burning machine. All you need to do is turn up that furnace so you're torching even more fat. Here's how.
DON'T STARVE.
Restricting food kills your metabolism.
TURN IN EARLY.
People who sleep less and are under more stress may have more visceral (abdominal) fat, which interferes with metabolism.
GO ORGANIC.
Pollutants from pesticides may hinder the energy-burning process.
STAND UP.
Breaking up long periods of downtime increases fat burning.
KEEP IT CHILLED.
Drinking six cups of cold water a day can raise your resting metabolism by about 50 calories daily. (That adds up!)
GET SPICY.
Capsaicin, a compound that is found in chili peppers, can fire up your metabolism.
SIP COFFEE OR TEA.
Caffeine can boost your metabolism.
FIGHT FAT WITH FIBRE.
It can increase fat burning by 30 percent. Aim for 25 grams of fibre a day.
EAT IRON-RICH FOODS.
Iron is essential for carrying the oxygen your muscles need to burn fat.

Most World Extreme Castles

Sunday, 26 June 2011

Extreme Castles: Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Castles generally aren’t something you’d call run-of-the-mill, but some of the world’s historic castles take things to extremes. Here’s a tour of some of the most notable castles you’ll find — no castle-storming needed.
No place symbolizes the extremes of the romantic, fantastical castle ideal like Neuschwanstein Castle, rising from the hills near Germany’s border with Austria. The brainchild of Ludwig II of Bavaria — who also built several other extravagant castles, and left behind plans for still more — the 19th-century castle is a turret-bedecked, theatrically ornate confection that seems made for a fairy tale. No wonder Neuschwanstein reportedly served as the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Extreme Castles: Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

Bounded by water on all sides, Eilean Donan Castle commands a dramatic landscape from a small island in the Scottish Highlands. In the castle’s early days, waterways were the main transit arteries in this inlet-filled region, and the castle — perched at the convergence of three sea lochs — was perfectly situated for defense. First built in the early 13th century as protection against marauding Vikings, Eilean Donan Castle has been associated with the Clan MacRae for centuries.

Extreme Castles: Predjama Castle, Slovenia

A castle on an island is one thing, but a castle in a cave? Slovenia has just that in the form of Predjama Castle, built in the mouth of Postojna Cave, about 100 miles east of Venice, Italy. The in-cave location provided excellent defensive capabilities for the castle, whose history goes back at least to the 13th century; these days, cave tours are popular with visitors to the castle.

Extreme Castles: Windsor Castle, England

Just west of London, Windsor Castle is huge, and it’s hugely old, too. According to the British government, Windsor Castle — one of Queen Elizabeth II’s official residences — is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world. Its history dates back to William the Conquerer; in the nearly 1,000 years since then, Windsor has expanded to a floor area encompassing about 480,000 square feet.

Extreme Castles: Palácio da Pena, Portugal

With its multicolored exterior walls and its eclectic aesthetic styles, Portugal’s Palácio da Pena almost resembles a cake covered with colorful frosting. The romantic, fanciful castle was built on a craggy hill near Lisbon in the first half of the 19th century and incorporates elements of German, Moorish and other architectural traditions. These days it’s a Portuguese national monument and is used for state occasions.

Extreme Castles: Prague Castle, Czech Republic

Prague Castle is widely considered the world’s largest castle complex. Dominating the Prague skyline from a hill overlooking the Vltava River, Prague Castle has an area of about 750,000 square feet. The castle was probably founded around 880, and it houses the crown jewels and relics of the Bohemian kings who ruled from there over the centuries.

Extreme Castles: Bled Castle, Slovenia

Watch your step here! Bled Castle is dramatically perched on a 415-foot-high cliff looming over Lake Bled, in northwestern Slovenia. The ancient castle was first mentioned in an early 11th century document that called it "castellum Veldes" — the castle on the cliff. The strategic location and the great view have attracted visits by prominent officials over the years; some of the more recent guests have included then-first lady Laura Bush and Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Extreme Castles: Burghausen Castle, Germany

At close to 3,500 feet long — that’s considerably more than half a mile — Burghausen Castle is believed to be the longest castle in Europe. Burghausen was founded in the 11th century or earlier, and it saw plenty of military action over the years; this led to the expansion of its fortifications over several centuries. Burghausen lies about 60 miles east of Munich, and it still boasts the majority of its medieval fortifications.

Extreme Castles: Citadel of Aleppo, Syria

Just which castle is the world’s oldest is up for debate, but Syria’s Citadel of Aleppo should at least be part of the conversation. Its history goes back to the Hellenistic period more than 2,000 years ago; even before that, the Assyrians built a temple on the site, and the biblical prophet Abraham is said to have walked these grounds.

Extreme Castles: Malbork Castle, Poland

Castles don’t come much bigger than the one in Malbork, Poland, near the Baltic Sea. The castle was founded by the Teutonic Order in 1274 and was expanded several times over the years to accommodate the increasing number of Teutonic Knights, of whom up to 3,000 may have lived here in the castle's heyday. It’s considered one of the best examples of Gothic brick castle complexes in existence.

Extreme Castles: Castle Stalker, Scotland

Few castles look lonelier than Castle Stalker at high tide. Castle Stalker — pronounced "stall-ker" — sits on what is usually a tiny island in western Scotland, although at low tide the water recedes enough that you might be able to wade over from the mainland. Castle Stalker may be one of the most-seen in the world, at least on screen: The 14th-century castle starred in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," appearing in the final scene as Castle Auuggh.

Extreme Castles: Chapultepec Castle, Mexico

There’s one castle in continental North America that has housed sovereigns: Mexico’s Chapultepec Castle, which Emperor Maximilian I called home during the short-lived Second Mexican Empire in the 1860s. The castle’s hilltop location in present-day Mexico City was once sacred to the Aztecs the modern castle’s history dates to the 18th century.

Fun A Weekend of Great Pride

Friday, 24 June 2011

Fun: A Weekend Full of Pride Festivals
Originating in New York in 1969, the first Pride March was a commemoration of the riots at the Stonewall Inn. Many cities will be celebrating the event this weekend.

A Weekend of Great Pride

New York City's streets never lack color, but visitors and residents can expect the thoroughfares of Manhattan to get even brighter this Sunday at noon, when the 42nd annual NYC Pride March sashays down Fifth Avenue to the West Village, celebrating the LGBT community in zany, sequined spectacle. Originated in New York City in 1969, the first Pride March was a commemoration of the riots at the Stonewall Inn -- considered a threshold moment of gay and lesbian life in America. The vibrant parade, which has seen turnouts of more than 500,000 people in the past, is an enthusiastic display of sassy costumes, floats pumping disco music, drag queens and rainbow everything.
This year's parade grand marshals include Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller, who together initiated the "It Gets Better" project to support LGBT youths around the world. When the parade ends, the parties begin. Everyone's invited to Pridefest, the boisterous post-parade street fair on Hudson Street, for a night of cocktails, flirtation and, no doubt, more than a few impromptu Broadway show tunes.
 San Francisco Dyke March
The emerging social acceptance of LGBT Americans allows them to live their lives openly and freely, in the process, it's made that experience something more than a lifestyle; even in politically aware San Francisco, it's close to becoming a commodity as more and more corporations attach themselves to gays and lesbians as consumers.
On Saturday, at 3 p.m., the city's residents will be reminded how that fight goes on. For the 18th year, the San Francisco Dyke March will be held to celebrate the lives of lesbian women, their supporters. This year's march continues a policy of keeping corporate floats and signs out, while welcoming grassroots jubilation and celebration. Although the march is open to women only, allies of either gender are welcome at the rally in Dolores Park before the march, and to cheer as dykes head to the Castro district. It's a lively, welcoming alternative to those Pride festivities in danger of getting blander and slicker each year, victims of the movement's own successes.
San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade
While the Dyke March is a gender-exclusive event, the San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade is a more wide-open affair. Taking place on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at San Francisco's capacious Civic Center Plaza, this year's model of SF Pride marks its 41st anniversary, and takes place amid a growing critical mass of awareness and acceptance of the LGBT experience (lawmakers in New York state are currently debating same-sex marriage). With 19 stages and hundreds of parade attractions, the San Francisco Pride Celebration is considered the biggest in the nation. This year, attractions will include actress, comedian and cultural flamethrower Sandra Bernhard; DJ/producer Paul Goodyear; and the cast of A.C.T.'s world-premiere production of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City," performing songs from the new musical. Events at the main stage will be sign language-interpreted. And the Pride Parade, on Sunday, brings a vibrant flamboyance to the cityscape as floats and dancers storm Market Street in joyous celebration.
Seattle Pride Celebration and Parade
If you're in Seattle on Saturday, join the city's Capitol Hill community from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. to celebrate LGBT pride and diversity in an array of enticingly spirited activities. On three stages along Broadway (between John and Republican streets), feast your eyes and ears on drag revues featuring contestants from RuPaul's "Drag Race"; local performers and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence; musicians, artists, fashion shows and doggies in drag. DJs will host a dance party you can expect to run deep into the evening.
Seattle's Pride Parade, which steps off Sunday at 11 a.m., may not be as outrageous or well-attended as those in cities with bigger populations, but there'll no better place to be in the Emerald City. Dykes on Bikes will lead participants from 4th and Union to Denny Ave., then head west down Denny Way, where the theme for the 2011 parade -- "Be You. Be Proud. Express Yourself!" -- should be on outrageous display.
